Cookie-Crust Egg Tarts Land at PLQ Mall: Tai Cheong Bakery's Basement 2 Counter

July 22, 2026

Craving a cookie-crust egg tart still warm from the oven? Tai Cheong Bakery, one of Hong Kong’s most storied bakeries, runs a takeaway counter at Basement 2 of PLQ Mall, serving up its famous egg tarts alongside a full line-up of traditional buns and pies.

A Hong Kong Institution Since 1954

Tai Cheong Bakery traces its roots back to 1954, founded by the uncle of egg tart Master Au Yeung, who later inherited the business. Au Yeung went on to pioneer the now-famous cookie crust for his egg tarts, drawing on techniques picked up baking cakes at a hotel earlier in his career. The bakery’s reputation grew steadily, reaching a peak when Chris Patten, then governor of Hong Kong, became a regular at the original Lyndhurst Street outlet.

The cookie crust in particular set Tai Cheong apart from the more common flaky puff-pastry egg tarts, offering a firmer, slightly sweet, biscuit-like base that holds its shape against the smooth egg custard filling.

From Lyndhurst Street to Paya Lebar Quarter

Tai Cheong Bakery Singapore was established through a partnership between Food People Pte Ltd and Tai Cheong Bakery Hong Kong, first arriving as pop-up stores at Takashimaya in March and May 2016 before opening its first permanent Singapore store there that July. The brand later expanded with a full Cha Chaan Teng-style cafe at Holland Village in November 2016, serving a wider dine-in menu inspired by old Hong Kong classics.

Since then, Tai Cheong has grown into a network of takeaway counters across the island, including outlets at Novena, Raffles City, JEM, Northpoint City, VivoCity, and ION Orchard. The PLQ Mall counter brings that same lineup of Hong Kong bakes to the Paya Lebar Quarter precinct, giving office workers and shoppers in the area an easy stop for a quick pastry fix on the go.

What’s Inside the Counter

Unlike the Holland Village cafe, the PLQ outlet operates as a takeaway-only counter, focused on Tai Cheong’s signature baked goods rather than a full dine-in menu. The star of the counter is, of course, the original cookie-crust Egg Tart, alongside the fragrant Pandan Tart, Hong Kong Egg Milk Tart, Charcoal Egg Milk Tart, Durian & Cheese Tart, and Coconut Tart. Savoury options round out the signatures with the Chicken Pie and Char Siu Pie, plus the classic Lao Po Bing, better known as the Wife Biscuit.

Beyond the tarts and pies, the counter also stocks traditional buns, including the Char Siu Bolo Bun, plain Bolo Bun, Cocktail Bun, and Coconut & Cream Bun, along with the Hong Kong Style Chiffon Cake and savoury Chinese Radish Cake, ideal for grabbing a few pieces on the way home or sharing a box with colleagues over coffee.

Pro Tip: Egg tarts and cookie-crust pastries are best enjoyed within a few hours of purchase, while the crust is still crisp — time your visit close to when you plan to eat rather than buying too far ahead.

Where to Check for the Latest Deals

Tai Cheong Bakery periodically runs limited-time promotions across its Singapore outlets, from multi-tart bundle deals to festive gift sets timed around occasions like Mother’s Day. These have tended to be outlet-specific or time-limited, so no store-wide promotion is currently confirmed for the PLQ counter. It is worth following the brand’s Facebook or Instagram directly for the latest deals before making a special trip.
